Overview

There has been a large-scale change in the perception of the primary determinants of health. In addition to those factors that operate at the level of the individual, factors which operate at the level of populations are now recognized as important. Public health programs are uniquely designed to determine population level factors and to find methods for intervention based on these determinants. The creation of the UBC CDC has its origins in this changing paradigm.

Dr. Robert Brunham
Scientific Director, UBC CDC

Our aim is to achieve an international standard of excellence in the management and prevention of over 40 infectious diseases of public-health significance. By using basic science applications from epidemiology, sociology, demography, mathematics, ecology, microbiology, genomics and evolutionary biology, UBC CDC is making a marked difference.

The host institutions, BCCDC and the University of British Columbia, have provided the UBC CDC with a state-of-the-art research environment, contributed nationally and internationally recognized health professionals and researchers. Moreover, the unique partnerships UBC CDC has with BCCDC and University of BC has facilitated recruitment, provided academic career paths, created excellent student placements and learning environments, and supported research with informatics, statistical analysis, and communication resources.
